NATURE OF WORK

 

In both job titles you are responsible, through subordinate inspectors, for the inspection of quality of work and materials on state building projects such as hospitals, schools and office buildings, and for ensuring contractors are in compliance with contract documents and building codes and standards.  You are also responsible for administration of the construction portion of the contract and ensuring that each project is completed on time. 

 

Construction Inspection Supervisors supervise a group of subordinates who inspect the quality of work and materials on projects; ensure compliance with plans and specifications; ensure materials have been approved for use; resolve differences between inspectors and contractors; review and prepare reports, contractor payment estimates and correspondence; and conduct job conferences, serving as the departmental liaison to the contractors, architect, and engineers. 

 

Construction Inspector Managers direct the inspection and construction administration of several projects through Construction Inspector Supervisors; review progress schedules and/or CPM (Critical Path Method) schedules, cost breakdowns, change orders, and related reports; attend job conferences and inspections; and resolve the more complicated issues associated with projects.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.  If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.

 

You may be required to travel extensively and occasionally stay overnight.  Offers of employment will be made only if you are willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

You may be required to work overtime or an unusual schedule to meet project deadlines.  Overtime payments are made in accordance with the union contract or Commonwealth Personnel Rules.

 

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Construction Inspector Supervisor  - One year as a Building, Electrical or Mechanical Construction Inspector; OR 4 years of progressively responsible experience as a carpenter, mason, bricklayer, roofer-tinsmith, electrician, plumber, steamfitter, refrigeration mechanic, pipe fitter, HVAC technician or structural ironworker, which has included 2 years of experience in inspection work, and an associate’s degree in either Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field; OR 3 years of progressively responsible experience in the inspection of commercial construction or major renovation work, which required reading and interpreting plans and specifications, and an associate’s degree in either Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Construction Inspector Manager - One year as a Construction Inspector Supervisor; OR 6 years of progressively responsible and varied experience as a building, plumbing or electrical trades worker, including or supplemented  by 2 years of experience as a supervisor in any of these trades; OR 5 years of progressively responsible and varied experience in the inspection of building, plumbing or electrical equipment and systems construction or installation, including or supplemented by 2 years of experience as a supervisor of any of these inspection programs, and graduation from high school or equivalency; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Clarification of Requirements

 

You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education.  Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

TESTING

 

The Construction Inspector Supervisor and Manager test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission Office.

 

The 3 hour test will cover the following subject areas:

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Civil Service Commission Offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS
